The issue that has occurred at least twice to my knowledge is that a car will stop for people wanting to cross the road; another car then comes behind that car and perhaps assumes the first car has parked and overtakes it causing the people that have started to cross to jump back to avoid being hit.
I think the relevant rule here is possibly H2 – concerning pedestrians on, or waiting to cross, a zebra crossing.
This crossing, however, is not a “zebra“ crossing, unfortunately. Furthermore, there is no sign to warn drivers of a pedestrian crossing and nothing to indicate a school is nearby or, indeed, the possibility of children crossing. The only sign that indicates the possibility of children is the sign below the warning of crossroads saying “Playground”, for some reason! This is seen coming from the direction of the A272 (see picture right). There is no sign at all coming from the direction of the crossroads which is the direction from which previous incursions have happened.
I understand the Parish Council are in touch with WSCC Highways to see what can be done to improve safety in this area. In the meantime, once school returns, can I please suggest that everyone drives with extra care when approaching this crossing.
Many thanks
