Philip Midwinter

(2 July 1947 to 26 December 2023)

Members of the Wisborough Green Horticultural Society and so many others around the village were very sad to hear that Phil Midwinter had died on Boxing Day after a long illness.

Ably supported by his wife Alison, Phil was a dynamic and energetic secretary and then chairman of the Horticultural Society between 2009 and 2021, for whom no challenge was too great or problem intractable; his presence was felt in so many areas of our village life and beyond, from the Table Tennis Club to his regular collections of items to support the homeless in Horsham.

Previously fruit farmers in Oxfordshire, Phil and Alison went on to run a successful Bed and Breakfast in the Lake District before coming to Wisborough Green in 2007.  Aside from his considerable expertise in all matters horticultural (and considerable successes each year at the flower shows), Phil will be remembered for his tremendous enthusiasm and for being ever-willing to help others in any way he could with advice and practical support (and many apple trees around the village have benefitted over the years from his expert pruning).  Amazingly, Phil was able to complete his long running challenge to cycle all round the coast of England and Wales in April last year.  Lively, spirited and a force of nature, Phil will be very widely missed.
