The Coronation Big Lunch

Sunday 7th May 2023; 2-9.00 PM

Whether you are a fan of the royal family, or ambivalent, the Coronation of King Charles III means everyone has a unique occasion to meet as neighbours to share in food and fun. For Wisborough Green it is an opportunity for the village to come together on its iconic Green and celebrate and strengthen the community bonds of friendship, support, and co-dependency which make it such a special place. We are a village who knows how to enjoy itself and Sunday 7th May is the perfect time to dress up, summon up your party spirit and invite friends to join you on the Green for a picnic with a lot of extras. Well, that’s the basic idea. What’s not to like!

The bigger picture

The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will be marked with events across the country and a concert at Windsor Castle. Their Majesties want to encourage people to spend the Coronation Weekend celebrating with friends, families, and their communities.

The Coronation Big Lunch is overseen by the Eden project, and it invites neighbours and communities across the United Kingdom to share food and fun together at Coronation Big Lunches on Sunday 7th May 2023, in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. From a cup of tea with a neighbour to a street party, a Coronation Big Lunch brings the celebrations to your neighbourhood and is a great way to get to know your community a little better.

Thousands of events are expected to take place in every corner of the United Kingdom as people take to their streets, gardens, parks, and community spaces to join the celebrations and mark this historic occasion.

So, what is going on in Wisborough Green?

On Sunday 7th May you are invited to bring a picnic and sit down with friends on the Green from 2pm.  Settle in, get your picnic blankets, tables and chairs sorted and wait for the welcome and toast at 2.30pm. After that be prepared for an afternoon and evening of companionship, dancing, entertainment, and merriment.

We are encouraging all attendees who wish to, to dress with a royal theme. There will be prizes for the best outfits, including a King and Queen of the day. Don’t be shy, it’s amazing how a little bit of fancy dress breaks down the barriers.

To put us in the party spirit Wisborough Green’s very own Glee band will be performing a few songs for us as we relax into the afternoon. Following this, we will have two sets from the Hilltop Ceilidh Band. The music will get your toes tapping and the professional callers will get you twisting and reeling in the right direction (hopefully). Whether you are 6 or 96 there will be a dance for you.

From 6.30pm Oli Austen and the Miracle Piglets will be performing, and they will take us through sunset until 9pm.   If you are worried about feeling a little peckish as the day wears on there will be a BBQ running from mid-afternoon and the pavilion will be open for refreshment.

For those who feel the need for a bit more of a challenge, there will be several activities taking place during the afternoon to keep you amused. The Welly Wanging competition will determine the champion chuckers of the village. A Tug Of War is also planned, and the rules committee is currently finalising the details.

A Treasure Hunt is being prepared for the more cerebrally minded and will be available for entry on the day, and there will be opportunities to win prizes throughout the afternoon such as Guess The Weight Of The Coronation Cake.

What will it cost me to attend?

There will be no charge to attend the event, it is on the Green which is a public space and the entertainment as outlined is provided for you. The organising committee is grateful for the support of the Parish Council and Chichester

District Council for covering some of the costs of this inclusive village event. Without their commitment it would not have been possible.

However, there is a short fall of around £1700 that the committee is hoping to make up prior to and during the event, including a raffle on the day for a Wheelbarrow Of Booze.  We would appreciate everyone’s support to cover some of the short fall. As this is being penned, a further £250 has been donated. We are asking those of you who can, and wish to, to make a donation to cover some of the costs to make this a fantastic village event. You can do so by going to:

or scan this QR code:

All money raised will go towards the funding and enhancement of our Coronation Big Lunch and any surplus funds raised will be used for beneficial causes in the village.

How can I help?

The most important thing is to come along with your friends and make the event a success.  If you would like to help in other ways e.g. setting up the Green, running some of the events on the day or helping on the BBQ etc please send an email to thebiglunchWG@gmail.com. As they say, the more the merrier.
