The Horticultural Society launched its first post-covid gardening talk at the beginning of October – with just a little trepidation.   Would people come?  Would the committee be home alone in the village hall?     We started by putting out 30 chairs, then added row after row.   Over 50 people turned out to hear Mark Saunders, head gardener at Fittleworth House, give an illustrated talk on “Garden Inspiration” and he did inspire us……    Slide after slide of Britain’s most beautiful gardens slid by, each with hints as to how they might transform a less stately plot.   Mark taught us how to make our own dahlia varieties from seed,  exhorted us to sow our onions this weekend and told us how to protect our hedges from box blight.    It was a wonderful blend of pure escapism and practical tips and much enjoyed by the audience.   A huge thank you to everyone who turned up and supported the event.

Our next event is the Christmas Wreath Making Class to be held on:

Saturday 6th December, 2 to 4 p.m. in the Village Hall.

Everything will be provided,  wreath rings,  moss,  fabulous pine and spruce foliage,  fir cones,  orange and lemon slices and luscious ribbon.   You don’t need any previous experience,  there will be a demonstration to start with (whilst you sip prosecco and nibble on a mince pie) and then you will make your own wreath,  assisted if need be by a team of florists.   Everyone will go home with a stunning door wreath and we hope that this year the village will again be adorned with the most beautiful Christmas door wreaths.   Tickets are £40 for non-members and £30 for members and all the proceeds go to funding the work of the Society and helping us to stage our June and August village shows.    As we go to press tickets are already going fast so please do contact us ASAP if you would like to come.

E-mail: katemosborne@aol.com or Tel: 01403 700165 to reserve your place.
